The Five-Stage Journey to AI Maturity: Asana's Roadmap for Organizations

Recently, Asana and Anthropic released their "State of AI at Work" study, providing a comprehensive look at AI adoption in the workplace.

This study stands out by introducing a five-stage AI maturity model that guides organizations on their journey to fully harness AI's potential.

I've summarised the study for you below. Alternatively, you can read the full study here.

Key Findings from the Study

Polling over 5,000 knowledge workers and consulting AI experts in the U.S. and U.K., Asana and Anthropic’s study uncovered several critical insights:

- AI Adoption Surge: The percentage of workers using AI weekly has jumped by 44% in just nine months, now reaching 52%.

- Limited Maturity: Only 7% of companies have mature AI implementations, characterized by successfully integrating multiple AI tools into work processes and regularly evaluating their impact.

- Training Gaps: A staggering 82% of workers report that their organizations have yet to provide training on generative AI.

Dr. Rebecca Hinds, head of Asana’s Work Innovation Lab, highlights that the report is the first to classify organizations according to a five-stage AI maturity model.

This model, along with the actionable insights provided, aims to help organizations advance their AI implementation.

The Five Stages of AI Maturity

1. AI Skepticism

Characteristics: Organizations are just starting to recognize AI's potential and explore its applications.

Focus: Opening up to AI’s possibilities.

2. AI Activation

Characteristics: Companies launch pilot projects to test AI technologies on a small scale.

Focus: Gaining hands-on experience and understanding AI's impact.

3. AI Experimentation

Characteristics: Larger AI initiatives are launched, addressing challenges of integrating AI system-wide.

Focus: Broadening AI projects and tackling integration issues.

4. AI Scaling

Characteristics: AI becomes embedded in the organization’s operations, reshaping workflows and decision-making.

Focus: Making AI part of the company’s DNA and operational strategy.

5. AI Maturity

Characteristics: Organizations skillfully leverage AI to drive transformative results, strategically aligning technology with goals.

Focus: Full integration of AI to achieve significant business outcomes.

The Path to AI Maturity: The 5 Cs

According to Asana, to transition from AI Skepticism to AI Maturity, organizations need to focus on five critical factors:

1. AI Comprehension (aka Understanding and Training)

Organizations must ensure employees understand how to use AI.

Mature organizations see a significant increase in weekly AI usage compared to those in the initial stages.

2. AI Concerns (aka Addressing Worries)

Executives need to be aware of and address workers’ concerns about AI.

These concerns evolve from understanding AI's basics to ethical implications as organizations mature.

3. AI Collaboration (aka Human-AI Interaction)

How employees view and collaborate with AI changes significantly with maturity.

Initially seen as a tool, AI becomes a teammate in mature organizations, actively contributing to work processes.

4. AI Context (aka Policies and Guidelines)

Mature organizations have clear AI policies and guidelines, ensuring consistent and ethical use of AI.

These principles cover transparency, fairness, accountability, and privacy.

5. AI Calibration (aka Measuring Effectiveness)

Regular evaluation and feedback are crucial.

Mature organizations engage their workforce in assessing AI’s impact, leading to better calibration and significant productivity gains.

Achieving AI Maturity

Most organizations are still in the early stages of AI adoption.

However, Asana and Anthropic’s roadmap offers a clear path forward. By focusing on the 5 Cs—Comprehension, Concerns, Collaboration, Context, and Calibration—companies can steadily progress toward AI maturity.

The journey involves more than just adopting technology; it’s about integrating AI into the organizational fabric, fostering a culture that embraces AI, and continuously measuring and refining AI’s impact.
